Scholars

Research Associate James B. Rebitzer is the Frank Tracy Carlton Professor of Economics and chair of the economics department at the Weatherhead School of Management, Case Western Reserve University, and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

His research interests include the economics of organizations and employment relationships, labor economics, health economics, and behavioral economics. Recent publications include:

  • "The Sociology of Groups and the Economics of Incentives: Theory and Evidence on Incentives in Medical Groups" (with W. Encinosa and M. Gaynor), Journal of Economic Behavior and Organizations (forthcoming);
  • "Physician Incentives in HMOs" (with M. Gaynor and L. Taylor), Journal of Political Economy, which won the National Institute of Health Care Management's Health Care Research Award for best health-management research in 2004;
  • "Monitoring, Motivation, and Management: The Determinants of Opportunistic Behavior in a Field Experiment," American Economic Review, 2002.

Rebitzer has been a member of the editorial board of The American Economic Review and Industrial Relations, and serves as a referee for a number of scholarly journals, including American Economic Review, Economic Journal, Economica, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organizations, Quarterly Journal of Economics, and Review of Economics and Statistics.

He has been a member of the faculty at MIT's Sloan School of Management and the University of Texas at Austin. Rebitzer received a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
