Nisreen Alami is Programme Advisor for UNIFEM’s Gender Responsive Budgeting (GRB) Programme. Ms. Alami provides technical support to UNIFEM’s GRB work in countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. In her work, her emphasis is on developing a rights-based approach to budgeting, and ensuring gender responsive budgeting with regard to specific areas of inequalities such as HIV/AIDS, violence against women, and access to resources and services. She has contributed to a number of UNIFEM publications including a training manual “gender responsive budgeting in practice” (2006), a resource pack on GRB and Women’s Reproductive rights (2006), and a paper entitled “ Promoting Gender Equality in new aid modalities and Partnerships” (2006).

Prior to that, she worked in UNIFEM’s Arab States Regional Office based in Amman, focusing on women’s economic rights and governance issues in the Arab region. She started her career in the Banking Sector in Jordan, but shifted to the development world working as a social worker with Save the Children in lower income areas in Amman.

She holds a Masters degree in Economics and Development Studies from London School of Economics in 1994 specializing in Social Policy and Planning; and a BA in Political Science and Economics from the University of Jordan.
