The Many Faces of Poverty in the United States

Sophie Mitra is associate professor in the department of economics at Fordham University, with research interests in disability, development, and applied microeconomics. She holds an MA in development economics and a doctorate in economics from the University of Paris I Panthéon–Sorbonne. Before doing her doctorate, she was a development practitioner and worked for the Overseas Development Institute, London, as a fellow in Fiji. Mitra has recently studied the association between disability and poverty, the economic impact of disability onset, multidimensional poverty and disability in the United States, social protection programs, and the effects of mental health problems on employment and poverty. She has published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including the American Economic Review, Health Economics, Social Science and Medicine, and World Development, and has also served as editor and reviewer.
