Recapping the 32nd Annual Levy Economics Institute Conference

The Levy Economics Institute’s flagship conference, which took place on June 16, 2025, was a resounding success. The 32nd Annual Minsky Conference brought together leading scholars and policymakers to examine contemporary developments in finance through a Minskyan lens, with a focus on the persistent economic fissures shaping political outcomes in the US. Discussions highlighted the long-term exodus of the working class from the Democratic Party and the economic concerns driving voter behavior, alongside explorations of alternative development models, including China’s trajectory and proposals for Africa. A keynote address by US Congressman Ro Khanna—an economist by training—shed light on the pressing issue of economic insecurity and the policy interventions needed to address it, reinforcing the conference’s emphasis on real-world solutions to systemic challenges. Videos from the conference will be available soon.
The Conference was followed by the Levy Institute Summer Seminar, which continues to inspire emerging scholars. This year, we provided students with a platform to present their research and engage with the Institute’s foundational work on Minskyan financial dynamics, stock-flow consistent (SFC) modeling, and monetary sovereignty. Participants explored how these frameworks can inform their own research questions, deepening their understanding of macroeconomic instability and policy design. The workshop underscored the Levy Institute’s commitment to fostering the next generation of heterodox economists equipped to tackle today’s most pressing economic issues.
