Climate Change and Education: Evidence from Palestine
This study investigates the impact of climate change on women’s education in Palestine, focusing on how climatic factors affect years of schooling. Using pooled data from the Palestinian Labor Force Survey and climate indicators from the Palestinian Meteorological Department, the analysis explores both immediate and lagged effects of climate change on women’s years of schooling. Findings reveal gendered disparities in the effects of rainfall and temperature on schooling, with women facing unique vulnerabilities. Mechanism analysis indicates that agricultural households in Palestine are highly vulnerable to climatic shocks which in turn increases the vulnerability of girls in these households; Climatic shocks negatively impact farming productivity and the overall working environment, exacerbating the challenges faced by these families. The study also identifies regional heterogeneities, with southern districts showing greater resilience compared to central and northern regions, while Jericho faces pronounced adverse impacts.
